When it comes to hair lightening options, choosing one can seem overwhelming at first. You need something that not only matches your desired look, but also fits your lifestyle.
In the past, highlights have been viewed as the traditional lightening option. More recently, the balayage has emerged as a popular alternative. But what exactly is a “balayage”? How is it different from regular highlights, and is it right for you?
What’s a balayage?

The term balayage actually refers to a technique, not a specific look. Many styles can be achieved with the balayage technique, including the popular "ombré".
Balayage means to freehand paint sections of hair for a dimensional and lived-in look. The results give a natural grow-out that won't need refreshing as often as highlights.
A balayage can be applied in heavy or lighter sections for either a bold or more subtle look.
What are highlights?

Traditional highlights use foils to apply lightener to sections of hair strands from root to tip. The amount of hair placed inside the foil will influence the boldness of the end results.
Because highlights usually start close to the scalp, new growth will be more apparent. Highlights require regular touch-ups to maintain a fresh look.
Which Should You Choose?

All things considered, I recommend the balayage as the more versatile lightening option. It’s more customizable, lower maintenance, and can look more natural than highlights. The lack of upkeep balayage’s require also make it the more cost-friendly option in the long-run.
Those with dark hair can achieve a light and bright look with a balayage. Depth and dimension can also be added to blonde hair with a reverse balayage, which gives a more lived-in look that's easier to maintain.
Whether you want a balayage or highlights, consulting a professional hairstylist to find a solution that fits your desired style, budget and routine is always recommended.
